Yoga for Back Care

Nearly everyone at some point has back pain that interferes with work, routine daily activities, recreation, and quality of life. Second to headaches, back pain is the most common neurological ailment in the United States and the most common cause of job-related disability and a leading contributor to missed work. Fortunately, most occurrences of low back pain go away within a few days. However, without adequate knowledge and tools to adequately care for your back, you could unknowingly be increasing your chances for long-term, chronic back pain and injury.

In this 4-Class Yoga for Back Care Specialty Class Series you will:

  • learn to understand the causes of your back pain
  • discover the role of stress and emotions as contributors to chronic back pain and re-injury
  • practice a variety of relaxation and breathing techniques to relax, release and let go
  • learn a variety of yoga postures and conditioning methods for self-care and alleviating back pain
  • exercise safely and increase strength, flexibility, and endurance
  • apply methods for good posture and body mechanics for daily living activities
  • take personal responsibility for your health and wellness
  • find your way back to optimal health
  • improve your quality of life

Yoga for Knees - Moving Forward

Louise L. Hay states, "KNEES, like the neck, have to do with flexibility; only they express bending and pride, ego and stubbornness. Often when moving forward, we are fearful of bending, and we become inflexible. This stiffens the joints. We want to move forward, but we do not want to change our ways. This is why knees take so long to heal; our ego is involved. The knees take a long time because we get our pride and our self-righteousness involved."

In this specialty class we will evaluate the alignment of the lower body - the feet, knees, and the legs as a whole. We will learn how improper alignment contributes to an imbalance in muscular conditioning that ultimately increases strain on the knee joints, which in turn can lead to potential injury or chronic pain. We will focus on strengthening postures that assist in reconditioning the muscles, balancing postures that inspire confidence to move forward, and movements that increase flexibility and range of motion. This class is especially suited for those suffering from knee pain, have experienced knee injuries including torn ACL or meniscus, or those wanting a better understanding of foundational alignment principles.

Yoga for Hip Stabilization, Sacroiliac Pain & Sciatica

The hips are the base of the core, where the lower body/legs, connect with the upper body. Among the issues associated with the hips are sacroiliac pain and sciatica - two different afflications that cause chronic pain. Sacroiliac pain is caused by misalignments and prolonged stress on the sacroiliac joints. Sciatica is caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve as it exits the sacrum and passes down into the muscles of the back of the thigh. In this specialty class we will examine the differences between sacroiliac pain and sciatica and learn exercises to help you understand and correct both. This class is especially suited for those suffering from hip pain or injury, or those wanting a better understanding of foundational alignment principles for the hips.

Yoga for Neck & Shoulder Tension

Stress exacerbates the muscular tension that results from improper posture. For many of us with desk jobs, we experience shoulder and neck tension from less desirable posture while sitting at a desk, working on the computer, talking on the phone and so on. In addition, past injuries, perhaps whiplash from an accident, further increases muscular tension. In this specialty class we will examine proper sitting posture and practice movements and stretches that will assist in alleviating neck and shoulder tension. Many of these movements and postures will assist in relieving tension by alternating stimulating and relaxing the muscles. These postures can also be practiced throughout the day to prevent and minimize chronic tension. This class is especially suited for those suffering from neck and shoulder tension, or those wanting a better understanding of foundational postures and movement practices.

Yoga for Core Strengthening and Stabilization

Both the abdominal and back muscles work together to improve core stabilization. By strengthening the core you create a strong support for the spine and improve overall posture. In this specialty class, you will not only learn and practice core strenthening and stabilization postures, we will also work to increase the full range of motion in the spine through forward folds/flexion, backbends/extension, side bends, and twists/rotation all working with increased axial extension from the base of the spine to the crown of the head. This class is especially suited for those wanting a better understanding of foundational strengthening and stabilization principles.
